Global Block Collective Events - Mar 4, 2010
For their first event at NMC, Kima, Chris and Victor spoke of the cultural context in which hip-hop emerged, its key elements, and its many positive effects. The forty people gathered at the NMC auditorium were also treated to some rapping by Kima, and some B-Boying by Chris and Victor.
The next day, Friday, March 5th, the group returned for two workshops. The first, on B-Boy dancing, drew a crowd of nearly fourty enthusiastic dancers. For a good two hours, Chirs and Victor taught the group new moves and effective ways to practice. In the afternoon, Kima led a workshop called "Basic Rhyme and Positive Expression", in which he talked with thirty aspiring writers, rappers and lyricists about how best to use hip-hop as a tool for expression and empowerment. The session ended with some members sharing some of their rhymes, much to Kima's delight.
Nepal Music Center then hosted a jam session that evening. After a welcome speech from NMC Chairman Mr. Santosh Sharma, the Hari Maharjan Project (which consists of Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya teachers Hari Maharjan, Riju Tuladhar, and Daniel Roshaili) and Jindabaad (a group made up of NSV students) each played a short set. The members of the Global Block Foundation then jammed with NSV teachers and students while the dancers who had come for the morning's B-Boy workshop danced in front of the stage. Eventually, the audience made it to the dance floor as well, and the event really took on a "block party" feel.
