Introduction
Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya, a music school established in the year 2062, by Music Nepal aims to provide formal education in music from the primary level. It is probably the first ever school established with due permission from Ministry of Education, with the given responsibility of developing curriculum for formal music education. The school is managed by Nepal Music Center, a non-profit organization situated at Battisputali, Kathmandu.
Though the school adopts western teaching methodology along with the eastern, we, at Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya feel that, adoption of western music curriculum is not the ultimate source for the development of Nepali music. Hence, the school is currently working on the development of relevant curriculum. In this process, Nepal Music Center intends to explore folk music of various ethnic groups as possible educational resource on the ground that it is a relevant uniting factor in Nepali cultural identity and social cohesion amidst great diversity. In line with the school’s belief that providing music education to the students from primary level will contribute to the healthy mental development of the children, school intends to make the so developed curriculum and other materials available to all.
We believe in “Learning by Doing” and follow the same principle in our teaching methodology. School workshops, ensembles and concerts are the parts of school activities. Along with the school teachers who have graduated from renowned universities, teachers and experts of international recognition are also invited as part of the educational activities.
As per the contract with Music Nepal, Rikskonsertene, the Norwegian Concert Institute, provides technical support to the school. This organization plays an important role in school development activities that includes teachers’ training and visits for talented students in foreign countries under exchange program.
