Formal Music Education

Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya, established in 2062 by Music Nepal, aims to provide formal music education from the primary level onwards. It may be the first school in Nepal to be assigned the task of developing a music curriculum by the Ministry of Education. With our curriculum approved up to class ten,  staff and teachers at NSV are currently working on the development of a curriculum for higher studies in music.  NSV is managed by Nepal Music Center, a non-profit organization in Bittisputali, Kathmandu.

NSV sees Eastern and Western pedagogies as complementary and relies on both to work towards an innovative instructional methodology. To this end, Nepal Music Center is studying musical traditions of various ethnic groups with the aim of using these findings to generate educational materials. In line with the school’s belief that providing music education to students from the primary level will contribute to their healthy mental development, teaching materials developed by the school will by made available to all.

Our belief in “learning by doing” is evident in our teaching methods. School workshops, ensembles, and concerts are among the regular activities put on by NSV students and staff. Our teachers have graduated from renowned universities and undergone rigorous training. International teachers and experts are often invited to teach here as well.

As per its contract with Nepal Music, Rikskonsertene (Concerts Norway) provides technical support to the school. This organization plays an important role in providing teachers’ training and funding visits of teachers and talented students to other countries.

Students of respective courses are categorized into small groups, usually of no more than five, according to their proficiency in music. This means that those looking to enroll as upper level students must audition, unlike beginner students. There are no prerequisite for admission; anyone and everyone can join NSV. Admissions are open throughout the year.

To register, simply come to Nepal Music Center with two passport-sized photos and fill out the necessary forms. There is an admission fee of Rs. 500, and a refundable deposit of Rs. 1000 (Rs. 1000 for dance classes) in addition to the monthly fee of Rs. 1000 per course (Rs. 1000 for dance classes). Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya facilitates the development of talented students from all over the country by providing merit- and need-based scholarships (from 25 percent to 100 percent). The school also provides free lodging and board along with tuition fees for their academics in other schools to outstanding students.
